Maintaining a Historic Community Landmark
First Congregational Church Steeple
One of Meredith's tallest and best known Community Landmark is the First Congregational Church's magnificent 96 foot high steeple with its 30 foot "spire" capped by a large, gold painted Weathervane. The Steeple's unique location on Highland Street since 1842 makes it a clearly visible landmark and is a significant part of the picturesque landscape that is the charm of this New England waterfront community.
Presently, as a result of its constant exposure to the elements, this well known steeple is in need of some critical repairs. When viewed from the ground with only the naked eye, the area of significant damage to the moldings above the clock section the of the steeple appear, at first glance, simply as dirt and mildew. A closer inspection reveals a far different story. Existing crown moldings have rotted significantly as a result of deteriorated roofing at the base of the Spire above them. This small "roof" area and the moldings below it are in desperate need of reconstruction. Repairs will cost a minimum of $30,000.
Although the congregation has started raising funds from within, and numerous fund raising events are planned, they will need considerable help from the wider community, and they are asking for our help.
Please support the congregation if possible, with a donation made directly to the First Congregation Church, designating "Steeple Repair Fund" on the memo line of your check. Work is planned for this summer.
Thank you in advance for your support in helping to maintain this distinctive and important Community Landmark. Donor's names will be listed in area newspapers, unless donors choose to remain anonymous.
